The Fireweed Fairies
On Kodiak Island where the melting snow is river bound
Fireweed fairies lay sleeping beneath the ground
Other creatures are stirring and have new homes to make
Along with them the fireweed fairies awake
The days grow longer and the sun warms the earth
Fireweed fairies get ready for birth
New shoots spring forth as the rain drizzles down
Fireweed fairies have no time to frown
The petals explode in a dazzling display
Fireweed fairies are busy at play
Collecting nectar and frolicking with the bees
Honey from the fireweed fairies is sure to please
When the days grow shorter and summer is almost done
Fireweed fairies are ready to run
The fireweed's grown tall and reaches for the sky
Fireweed fairies get ready to fly
With fluffy parachutes made from the seeds
Fireweed fairies wait to catch the breeze
The wind picks up and the fairies sail away
Dancing on zephyrs to land where they may
As the days grow colder with no warmth to be found
Fireweed fairies retreat back into the ground
With their work all done and the ground almost frozen
Fireweed fairies head to bed for some dozing
Sweet dreams fireweed fairies
Go to sleep with no cares
For when the ground first thaws
We will see you next year
